libraries, historical societies, archives, and university library special collections sections hold the records from many organizations that our Germanic ancestors joined. All the forms asked for extensive family and background information, including place of birth, family members serving in the military against the U.S. Minnesota required registrations of all non-citizens from every country and those records are available today. Businesses and schools underwent significant changes for protections. An ancestor may have been interred in a prison camp or had personal property seized. Some registrations still exist, as do some abstracts, name lists, and court battles. Both males and females over the age of 14 had to register. This lecture is designed to acquaint you with other federal records that may hold some of those elusive family details. Beyond NARA, other federal agencies contain helpful research information. These are valuable resources in our family information quest, but a listing of other NARA holdings of value for our research would easily fill up many pages. Each person should bring a few related photos and/or documents from their family history that they wish to preserve. Attendees will be given a packet of materials to work with during the workshop and to take home afterward. During the third hour attendees will get a chance to work on their own family story. In the second hour she will show us how she created a scrapbook of one of her German families dating back to the late 1600s, without having a photo or document dated before 1860. In the first hour, Carol will discuss best practices for preserving and storing documents and photos.
